Whirlpool uses two error code formats depending on the appliance age and model line. Older models (pre-2010) display single-letter codes like F1, F2, F21. Newer models display combined codes like F5 E3 where F indicates the fault category and E indicates the specific component.
On front-load washers with a single-line display, codes appear directly on the digital readout. On older top-load models without a digital display, the machine uses LED flash patterns — the number of flashes indicates the fault number.
Whirlpool's "F" codes always refer to functional failures (drain system, motor, heating element), while "E" subcodes point to the specific electrical component that triggered the fault. When you see a combined code, the F number tells you the system, and the E number tells you the part.
Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana, and JennAir appliances are all manufactured by Whirlpool Corporation and share the same error code system — so guides for Whirlpool often apply directly to these brands.
